Introduction to Kalaripayatt
Kalari is an ancient, holistic art form with a deep spiritual significance which includes exercises to develop sharp reflexes for unarmed combat and skillful fight. Initial training entails empty hand combat and gradually progresses to more challenging stages encompassing myriad weaponry such as- using sticks, dagger, knife, spear, sword and shield, Urumi etc. Kalaripayattu is noted for its high-flying acrobatics, graceful movements and employs the deadly weapons at ease
Chief Instructor
Vishnu Lal is a trained kalarippayattu instructor with a career spanning 8 years, hailing from Alappuzha, Kerala. He began his Kalaripayattu training under the guidance of Harikrishnan who holds the Guinness Book of World Records and the Limca Book. Vishnu is a gold medallist in kalarippayattu championship. He is highly passionate and dedicated towards his profession, for him kalari is a way of life. He motivates and builds confidence in his students. He is well versed in Northern style, (Vadakkan Kalari) and Southern style (Thekkan Kalari).
The Academy- aims to revive and keep this valuable art alive. We take immense pride to say that we have students from all walks of life & places, there is no age limit to stop one from acquiring knowledge irrespective of their gender. The practitioner can learn on many levels, from body conditioning and weapons training. The focal objective is to develop a sound body and mind. Styles of Kalaripayattu
There are mainly two main styles of Kalarippayattu: –
• Vadakkan or Northern style – The Vadakkan Kalarippayattu is predominantly practiced in the Malabar region of Kerala. The Vadakkan style emphasizes more on graceful body movement and the weaponry.
• Thekken or Southern Style - The Thekken Kalarippayattu or Adi Murai is practiced mainly in the Travancore region, this style involves more free armed techniques & powerful movements.
Stages of Learning
The practice of Kalaripayattu is divided mainly into four stages: The various bodily movements are derived from that of animals postures.
