Kalaripayatt, The oldest martial art on the planet
Training Methods
MEITHAARI
This is body conditioning. A sound body houses a sound mind. To practice and master an art, your body needs to be in excellent condition. The first phase taught to a student is called “Meipayattu” or “Meithaari”. Mei means body, and Meithaari means body conditioning.
KOLTHAARI
Once a student has mastered the body conditioning exercises, they train with wooden weapons including the long staff, the short staff, and a horn-shaped weapon called an “Otta”. Exercises and techniques involve using the entire body, incorporating jumps, footwork, and hand-eye coordination.
ANGATHAARI
The third stage in a Kalaripayattu practitioner’s journey involves learning to use metal weapons. These include swords and shields, spears, daggers, and a flexible sword called “Urumi”that is exclusive to the martial art.
VERUM KAI
The fourth stage of Kalaripayattu practice is learning to fight bare-handed and is referred to as Verum Kai in Kerala. Extensive training in the previous levels maximize the capabilities of an individual in terms of resilience, mental strength, physical condition, and achieve a remarkably high level of skill. Kalaripayattu is one of very few martial arts where weapons are taught before bare-hand fighting.
Kalari Treatment
Another specialty of Kalaripayattu is its use of pressure points (or vital energy points) for both healing and self-defense. This art is called Marma Kalai (or Varma Kalai in Tamil Nadu).
The human body has several vital energy points thatplay critical roles in optimal functioning of the body including the nervous system, circulatory system, endocrine system, and so on. A similar practice to acupuncture.Marma Kalai also involves knowledge of Ayurveda (the science of herbs and herbal medicine) and massage techniques. A complete martial art should teach not only how to attack and defend, but also how to heal and massage. A Kalaripayattu student would learn about each pressure point in the human body, its significance, its function, how to identify injuries and how to heal them.
